My name is Elisabeth Arsido sometimes my friend called me “Elsa”, I am sixteen and grade 8th student, living in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa at a place called Kotebe.

I used to live with my parents during my early child hood however my father died when I was very young at age of two. After death of my father my mother married to another person, to be step father for me. My step father was very harsh and he used to beat both my mother and me for every minor cases. My step father is a local carpenter and he was not making good money which was unable to cover our daily expenses and school materials. As a result of the existing rough relationship within the household and poor economic problem in my family I could not attend my education as desired. Though these challenges persisted I started to attend my elementary education with very poor facility in one government school which is very close to our home. As time goes the relationship between my step father and my mother worsened since he always beats her and they got divorced by 2004. After they separated, my mother and I started to live with my grand mother. My grand mother is very old and she is living close to our previous home. After one year we have moved to my grandmother’s house, my mother became seriously sick and died by 2006. I am currently living with my grandmother who is very old and economically poor.
It is in the midst of these problems I fortunately joined this child sponsorship project in 2003, which is funded by Dorcas Aid International Ethiopia and under implementation by Full gospel believers’ Church Relief and Development Office (a partner of Dorcas Aid Ethiopia). The project has supported me by providing food, blanket, bed sheets, sanitary materials, covering my school fee and medical costs. Because of these privileges I am actively and successfully attending my education at Wondyirad elementary school, thanks to God and the project I am an average student in my education carrier.
Aside to my education, I highly enjoy athletics and started to practice and involve on various athletics competition starting from 2004 when I was at age of thirteen. I developed the enthusiasm of enjoying athletics at a time I watched Olympic competitions on television, on which Ethiopian athletes like Kenenisa Bekele and others took part and won a gold medal. This encouraged me and I committed my self for athletics and we started exercising with some of my friends at my vicinity. Immediately after we started the exercise our sub city formed a local athletics club (which we call a project), on which I became one of the project member. The sub city has assigned a trainer and we regularly exercise running based on our age group as per the advice from the trainer. The athletics training we make does not overlap with school time and things are going very smooth simultaneously. My trainer, the project staffs and Dorcas Aid Ethiopia staffs are always with my side and are encouraging me so that I will become a known athlete in the future.
The good thing is that I have also received a package of sport wears from my Sponsor through Dorcas International Office recently by 2007; this has also helped me to wear appropriate sport wears during training and various competitions. I am deeply indebted and thankful for sending me the package of sport wears. Besides, I also grab this opportunity to extend my appreciation and thanks to the project staffs, Dorcas staff and my trainer without whom this could not be realized. Please be encouraged that your support is meaningful and making a difference in a life of children.
For your information I have so far participated in many athletics competitions and shown very good performance. Here are some for your reference:
- I have got a bronze medal in 10 Kms Ethiopian great run race, organized by the famous athlete Haile Gebresilase.
- I stood second on Yeka sub city 1500 meter athletics competition.
- I stood third on Yeka sub city 800 meter athletics competition.
- I held a third place on Addis Ababa elementary schools 1500 meter athletics competition.
My vision is to be a known Ethiopian athlete like Haile Gebresilase, Kenenisa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba, and Meseret Defar who are a world class known athletes. In addition I have also a dream to help and support other children who are destitute and with out parents after being successful in the athletics.
Finally I would like to say to my colleagues be encouraged, not frustrated by today’s situation, study and work hard to achieve your goals. Tomorrow is bright by help of God!!
